All Things Viking Global Investors
Viking Global Investors (“Viking”), founded by the enigmatic Andreas Halvorsen, is one of the most successful hedge funds in history. Let's delve into what sets Viking apart from its renowned “Tiger Cubs” hedge fund peers, such as Blue Ridge Capital, Lone Pine Capital, Coatue Management, and Maverick Capital.
Who is Andreas Halvorsen?
Halvorsen is Norwegian. He graduated from the Norwegian Naval Academy and later led a Norwegian SEAL team. He earned a Bachelor’s in Economics from Williams College in 1986, where he was a member of the ski team. He then obtained his MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1990, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar (top 10% of the graduating class) and a classmate of John Griffin, a fellow Tiger Cub who founded Blue Ridge Capital.
After graduation, Halvorsen worked in investment banking at Morgan Stanley. Later, he joined Tiger Management, where he served as a Senior Managing Director, an equity analyst, and a member of the management committee.
In 1999, he left Tiger Management to co-found Viking Global Investors with David Ott and Brian Olson1.
Halvorsen maintains a private profile. He once delivered a telecasted speech at the Milken Institute published on YouTube, which has since been taken down, illustrating the extent of his efforts to maintain a low public presence.
