Champlain Investment Partners (Burlington)

  • Year founded: 2004

  • Founder: Judith O'Connell and Scott Brayman

  • Founder BG: Both came from NL Capital Management. Judy is the operational person. Scott is the investment person.

  • Description: Champlain is a SMID-cap GARP investor. Both their Strategic Focus and Small Cap products have outperformed their benchmarks, though the Small Cap fund is currently closed to new investors. They have $16 billion AUM.

Birchview Capital (Burlington)

  • Year founded: 2012

  • Founder: Dr. Matthew Strobeck

  • Founder BG: He was a partner at Westfield Capital Management, the Boston-based growth investor (detail on Westfield in the Boston section below).

  • Founder education: St Lawrence University UG, University of Cincinnati Ph.D.

  • Description: From 2012 to 2014, Birchview operated as a family office. It’s a long-biased, growth-oriented hedge fund with the flexibility to invest in private companies. The fund may also take board seats in its portfolio companies. Its focus is primarily on healthcare and environmental improvement, the latter likely means energy and utility investments aligned with that theme.
